Exhibitors may build their own tack and equipment box (Figure 1), 4 feet long by 21 inches wide by 16 1/4 inches deep, by using the following instructions. Read the suggestions listed below before beginning construction.
* Prior to inserting the screws, apply a small amount of wood glue to the wood surfaces to be bonded.
* Since the point of the screws will not hold as securely in the plywood as in the 1" x 1 1/2" strips, where possible insert screws first through the plywood and then into the strips.
* To keep the plywood from splitting where screws are inserted, drill 3/32-inch starter holes in the plywood.
* Use the 3/4" screws for steps 11 and 12 only. Use the 1 1/4" screws in all other locations.
* Use a metal file to remove all screw points that may extend through the pieces of wood.
------------------------------ 1-4' x 8'x exterior glue 5/8" plywood 80-1 1/4" size 8 wood screws 27- 3/4" size 8 wood screws 2-4" "T" hinges 2-3 1/2" chest handles 2-4 1/2" safety lock hasp 36' of 1"x 2" wood stripping 3' of small chain or cord ------------------------------ Note: 1" x 2" strips actually measure 3/4" x 1 1/2"
Step 1. Completely place all markings for saw cuts on the 4' x 8' sheet of plywood before making any cuts (Figure 2).
Step 2. Saw on the lines. Accuracy in cutting will make the box easier to assemble.
Step 3. Place the bottom piece on the floor. Attach the feet 4 inches from the ends of the bottom piece and equal distance from the sides of the bottom piece (Figure 3).
Step 4. Turn the bottom piece over with the feet resting on the floor. Cut and arrange 1" x 2" strips on the topside of the bottom piece 5/8" in from the edges (Figure 4). Hold the strips in place and drill 3/32 inch starter holes for screws through the strips and into the bottom piece. Turn the bottom piece over with the feet facing upward. Attach the strips by inserting the screws first through the plywood and then into the strips using the drilled holes.
Step 5. Turn the bottom piece over again with the feet resting on the floor. Set the side pieces into place and attach. Insert the screws first through the side pieces and then into the strips (Figure 4).
Step 6. Set the end pieces into place and attach. Insert the screws first through the end pieces and then into the strips (Figure 4).
Step 7. Cut and place strips up the inside of the corners. Insert screws through the side pieces and end pieces into these strips.
Step 8. Cut and set the strips into place for the shelf. Insert the screws through the side pieces and the end pieces of the box into the strips (Figures 5 and 6).
Step 9. Place shelf side and shelf bottom into place and insert the screws through these pieces into the strips. Complete the framing with strips around the top of the box.
Step 10. Fasten the braces to the underneath side of the top piece equal distance from the sides of the top piece and 4 inches from the ends of the top piece (Figures 1 and 6).
Step 11. Turn the top piece over with the braces on the underneath side. Place top piece into place on the box and attach the hinges, lock hasp and handles using the 3/4" size 8 wood screws.
Step 12. Attach the small chain or cord using the 3/4" size 8 wood screws (Figure 1).
Step 13. Fill all imperfections in the wood with wood filler and sand smooth.
Step 14. Paint your box to improve its appearance and lengthen its life.
